Jake Haener: Rising Star in the Saints’ Quarterback Lineup

In 2024, the New Orleans Saints’ offense has experienced a revitalization, spearheaded by veteran quarterback Derek Carr, who is now in his 11th season in the NFL.

Although Carr’s performance last year was commendable, with solid statistics, the Saints finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 9-8 record, failing to qualify for the playoffs. This year, however, the Saints are making waves, boasting the highest scoring offense in the league with an impressive average of 31.8 points per game through Week 4. They are now setting their sights on clinching the NFC South title.

As the undisputed starting quarterback, Carr is pivotal to New Orleans’ offensive success. However, should misfortune befall him, the Saints have alternatives on their roster.

Let’s delve into the Saints’ quarterback depth chart and assess Carr’s performance as the team gears up to take on the Kansas City Chiefs in a highly anticipated “Monday Night Football” matchup during Week 5.

Jake Haener, selected in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, didn’t see any game action last season due to a six-game suspension for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy. At that time, he was the third-string quarterback behind Carr and Jameis Winston.

With Winston no longer part of the team, Jake Haener has ascended to the backup role. His strong performance during training camp earned him this position, and he has participated in two games this season. In Week 1, he attempted one pass, which fell incomplete, while in Week 2, he had three rushing attempts that resulted in a loss of three yards.

If Carr were to sustain an injury, Haener, who served as the starting quarterback for three years at Fresno State, would be ready to step in and lead the offense.
